Sonko boosts the Kenya womens team

The Kenya Women’s Rugby team received a shot in the arm from Nairobi Senator in the form of funds for their playing kit and a bus.

Senator Mike ‘Sonko’ Mbuvi on Monday said that he will support the ladies team in their endeavours to qualify for the World Cup in both 7 and 15 a-side tournaments

The Senator gave the team Sh200,000 for their allowances, kits and a bus to transport the ladies to the training venue at Kenya Rugby Union Grounds three times a week.

I am not in a capacity to talk on behalf of our young government, but I will be sure to express your grievances to the President and The Cabinet secretary Sports and youth affairs,” Mr Mbuvi said.

Mr Mbuvi further stated that the challenges faced by the ladies including lack of allowances and funds to facilitate effective training by the coaches, should be looked into, to allow for better performance.

The Ladies team was led by the Kenya Womens’ Team Manger Doris Mwanzia, Kenya Rugby Union Marketing Executive Yvonne Namai, Coach Malik Ndemi and Strength and conditioning coach Mike Shamia.

Ms Mwanzia stated lack of appropriate funding as the cause of poor development, demoralization among players and poor performance in the past tournamnets.

I put the girls through training like the boys, yet their have no supplementation. They therefore are wearing out their muscles. Without funds, we cannot get the appropriate supplements,” Coach Shamia said.

The team, which is set to host a fund raising event on August 17th at the Impala Grounds, is preparing for the womens 7s season that starts off with Safaricom 7s on Sept 20th- 22nd.
